Fear is seeping into the very heart of our community. It comes disguised as anxiety, worry, depression, concern, projection about the future, low self-esteem, panic, shyness, social anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, jealousy, phobias or mental trauma. This list could go on.

And its hardly surprising when we realise that we are bombarded 24/7 (by the Internet, television, mobile phones and social media) with negativity, global bad news and marketing that implies we are not ‘good enough’ – unless of course we buy this or that product or holiday…and to which truly deserving television charity appeal shall I give £3 a month? It’s exhausting and completely demotivating. Do you know anyone who is truly happy and content with their life.

Are you?

But do we ever acknowledge that many of us live our lives in fear. Will I keep my job, will I have enough money, will I get that promotion, will I pass that exam, am I too ugly, why I am I so shy, will I ever find someone who truly understands me, will my relationship last, will I catch a killer virus, will my pension pot be enough, I’m being bullied, what about the ever-rising cost of living, climate change and on and on???

All this leads to a nagging inner restlessness and discontent – you know what I mean.

But, if you don’t believe me, next time you are disturbed by your life situation, simply ask yourself

“What am I frightened of?”

You might be surprised at the answer!

When I’m walking through town, sometimes, someone will rush out of a shop door and we bump (or nearly bump) into each other.

Usually we both apologise, smile and rush on.

Occasionally I reflect that I apologised even when it was clearly not my fault. Somehow I feel better for the experience.

Sometimes, someone will rush out of a side street but we don’t bump into each other. Which is lucky – because we are both in our respective cars. I get irritated and make sure the other person knows about it. The other person usually returns the favour – and I get more irritated. Feeling self-righteous and somewhat superior.

Then I notice that the other driver is the same person I almost bumped into while walking earlier. However this time there is a difference – WE ARE IN OUR CARS.

So what makes me change from a polite (even charming) pedestrian into a snarling, over-sensitive motorist?

Perhaps it’s just fear!

….and little boys and little girls and women and men.

Tears can be touching, terrifying, threatening, pleading, refreshing, relieving, embarrassing, engaging, tiny tears are cute, adults’ sobbing tears are overwhelming.

Are you too strong/ too important/ too old/ too frightened to cry?

Have you ever wondered why?

Or do you cry too easily/in the wrong place/at the wrong time/ with the wrong people?

One evening, a few months ago, I reached a breaking point (after a couple of years of growing frustration)with one of my neighbours whose extended family were parking nine vehicles close to my home, causing hazard and inconvenience to me and anyone visiting me.

Arriving home to this gauntlet of vehicles – AGAIN – I had had enough. I drove straight to my neighbour’s house, banged on the door and, trembling with anger, demanded that he moved at least some of his homemade traffic jam. I was very angry, he and his daughters were very reasonable and said ‘why didn’t you ask us to move them before?”

They apologised, and I started crying – dissolving away my anger. I went to my house with all the frustrations of two years of resentment bubbling out of me. Two years of irritation, fear and frustration were suddenly released. Why hadn’t I simply asked them to move their cars two years earlier and avoid all the heartache?

Reflecting later, I realised why I hadn’t knocked on his door. Fear. He had always been a good neighbour and I didn’t want to upset him. So I upset myself instead!

I learned a painful lesson from this experience – and it was my tears that taught me.

Troubled by alcohol? If alcohol is causing problems in your life or the life of a loved one, a bespoke Personal Intervention by Edward Rowan in the privacy of your own home can give you hope and provide a lasting solution.

No one understands the loneliness and misery of the problem drinker – other than someone who has been there, experienced the isolation and suffering, tackled the problem and found a lasting, comfortable solution.

I understand and I can help!

An ex-problem drinker, I have been sober for more than 26 years and have assisted a large number of fellow sufferers to overcome their alcohol problems and rebuild their lives.
From my own recovery experiences and those of hundreds of other ex-problem drinkers, I have developed Personal Interventions – a unique service for those who want to be free from the ravages of alcohol but who don’t want to be committed to the stigma and considerable expense of a long period in a clinic.

Personal Interventions are for men and women who want to get well as quickly as possible – while carrying-on as normal a life as possible, and I know from my own, past battle with alcohol that it’s not just the drinker who suffers – family, friends, colleagues and employers can all pay the dreadful price of problem drinking.

There is a way out – and I can help you achieve it.

To find out more in complete confidence, Contact me now on 07817 960420
